Is resistance equal to potential energy in an R/C car?
Im doing a science fair projecdt and i set up two wind up motors on the front tires and when the car goes forward it sping the motors and recycles that potential energy, and i increased its time from 11:57 to 20:01. so it did make it more efficient, but someone is against my project. this person says that its impossible because that very small resistance of the gear on the inside of the wheel spinning the motor is the same as the energy made from the spinning motor. Does this make sense? how can I explain the final conclusion?
No- resistance is load or energy loss.
The motors you are using to generate the energy are also an additional load on the motor moving the RC car in the first place.
When you look at the whole of the project, you have to look at the energy requirement of the driving motor- completely. You have to factor in the resistance of wiring, the resistance of the motor, the magnetic drag of the motor, the internal resistance of the battery, the mechanical friction at every bearing on the RC car, including the resistance of the bearings of the motors used as generators. Those are all added up, including wind drag, and Inertia as well as The influences of centrifugal or centripetal energy of all motors in motion, and then factor that agains the "gain" of your motors run as generators.
In a perfect system, with superconductors, superbearings, and negligable magnetic drag energy in the motors total energy in would equal total energy out, but part of that total energy is that of the car's motion- the equations will not balance to give you over unity or even unity of energy out versus energy in. In other words, your battereis will wear down faster with the "cogenerating motors than it would without them.
Think of it this way- suspend a microwave magnet on a rigid pole three inches in front of a magnetic car- and that rigid pole is in turn mounted to that car.
