vawt wind turbine Frequently Asked Questions
A question on a vawt wind generator?
First of all this is what a vawt turbine looks like.

The one I made has five panels instead of two like in the pic. It doesn't rotate very well in windy conditions, so would it work better if I place fins at an angle around it? I'm thinking it has drag on one side keeping it from rotating as it should, what do you think? Any ideas would be great.
This VAWT is a Savonius (?spelling) rotor type. They are finding that airfoil wing types are more efficient in a VAWT design, although these DO work pretty well.
First, an EVEN number of vanes works better, as the inflow on one aids the outflow on the other side and reduces drag; and under 6 feet in diameter 2 works better than 4.
Second, It would appear that the top and bottom plates are way heavier than they need to be.
Third, you need low friction bearings at the top and bottom pivot points.
Fourth, it would appear from the picture that it is about 2 feet across which is insufficient to develop much torque to turn anything but a very small generator.
My SMALL one is 2 vane, each vane 2'6'' with a 12" overlap in the center (6" of each vane,) 4 feet diameter, 4 feet high, with 1/2 inch tubing for shaft and 1/2 plywood end plates, with the shaft mounted through roller bearings.
It is mounted at 40 feet in the air with the generator at the BOTTOM of the tower. The generator is home built and puts out 12-16 volts at up to 30 amps in a moderate wind.
I am experimenting with a somewhat larger "airfoil" type at this time.
Hope this helps.
Bearing for 250-500 watt wind turbine?
Hey guys im looking for a bearing to use for a VAWT savenous im using 2 btw,
im using a 1 inch shaft and was wondering if anyone could tell me where im likely to find a good bearing for this project: eg local bearing shop, skate shop ect
i did go to the local bearing shop and bought 2 bearings but found that they did not spin very freely, after we rang the guy up about this he said that its like this because of grease and that it wares really quick if it doesnt have the grease or something
so basicly where can i find a good beairng for a 250-500 watt VAWT savenous turbine
thanks very much for reading my question
There are lots of ways to reduce bearing friction.
I would go with a much smaller shaft and use skateboard bearings, preferably sealed ones. They hold a 150lb guy jumping up and down, so ought to be OK. Lube lightly with graphite.
Bicycle bearings would be cool too. You can again use graphite rather than grease for very low friction. These can take axial load (pushing straight in on the axle), which the skateboard bearings won't do very well. Get some from a junkyard or old bike for free.
