I am renting a 2 bedroom apartment, most of which is in a basement. I received my fuel oil bill today, and in the past 30 days, it says my furnace has used 228 gallons of oil. We've had some issues with the furnace not working earlier this year, could there be something wrong with the furnace that is causing it to use so much oil? It's more than my parents consume with a whole house!
It's not as efficient as a new boiler On an average winter day (20-30 degrees) you can figure on using 5-6 gallons per day, ( 30 days X 5 gals= 150 gals X $3.30 =$495.00 per month) You can use less if you turn the thermostat down and tighten up the air leaks by insulating and covering windows. If it's an old converted boiler I would say the oil companies love you. You burn almost 8 gals a day compared to a newer one
can i save money by heating my bedroom with a oil filled heater and turn the gas furnace down?
I am looking to save money. my oldest boys room is downstairs so it is cold and i have a oil filled heater down there for him to keep him warm. i am wondering if i should buy one for my room and turn my natural gas furnace down to save money. i know the electric heater uses tons of electricity because i have a kill a watt meter and the one downstairs uses tons of juice. but i have no way to tell that if i just heated my room and turned my furnace down to say 60 at night if i would save money vs just leaving it at 65 at night because nat gas is cheaper than electricity. i cannot find much info on this. any input is appreciated.
im talking about suplementing keeping my room warmer with electric heat and turning my nat gas thermostat down.
It's really difficult to measure because of all the variables: the cost of gas, the cost of electricity, the volumes of the spaces in question, the degree to which the spaces are insulated. Obviously it would be cheaper to heat two small well-insulated spaces with oil-heaters than it would be to heat a whole house. You can block off some rooms, but the room with the thermostat will be the one that controls the heater switch. The only way you're going to be able to figure this one out is by trying it for a full month (making sure that the billing cycle coincides with the start-date of your test). But have you considered other kinds of heaters? Quartz heaters are often very efficient and might beat an oil heater in a small space.
