what would be the result of the combinations of methanol, caustic soda, penolphthalein and used cooking oil?
if i will combine the caustic soda, used cooking oil, penolphthalein, methanol to form fuel, what would be the possible results?
Ok …. Let’s get a few things straight.
The answer you are going to get is dependent on three things – the relative quantities of each compound, the addition order of the compounds and the temperature you process at.
If you use a catalytic amount of NaOH predissolved in methanol (to form sodium methoxide) and add it to the cooking oil at a ratio of about 1 : 5 and heat to, say 50°C for 12 hrs – you get biodiesel.
If, OTOH, you add a stoichiometric amount of NaOH to cooking oil and allow to partially react, then add methanol, you get a pretty toxic semi-liquid soap.
In either case, the phenolthalein plays no part in the reaction (except if you wish to titre for either free caustic or free acid).
Get the basic recipie for biodiesel off the ‘net. Do your homework – then ask again.
