Constructing a Tesla Coil.?
In the construction of a tesla coil, how do each of the following affect the coil?
- Coil diameters
-Primary coil gauge
-Secondary coil gauge
-Toroid size
coil diameters effects coupling and the resistance and inductive reactance in the length of line. thus having an effect on the q of the coil.
primary coil guage limits the current carrying capacity, mostly due to skin effect of high frequency. which is why most high q coils use either tubing or litz wire for reducing skin effect. since current is carried closer to the surface as frequency increases. since reducing the restance of skin effect, has a greater effect than reducing the dc resistance of the wire.
secondary coil guage has a direct correlation with the what it sees in inductive reactance from the primary as the source, and should be designed with the appropiate guage to handle what the primary is capable of transmitting for optimal performance.
a toroid is not necessary for the performance of the tesla coil. primary purpose of the toroid is to not radiate energy, or to recieve interference from outside sources. but if you are talking about ferite material toroid, it increases the coupling usualy resultingin a dramatic increase in the q of a transformetr coil. but the increase in q is due to the magnetic properties of the sintered black iron oxide material, and or ceramic binders. which can operate at higher frequencies than laminated silicon steels.
Can I use a grey PVC pipe for a tesla coil?
I am making a tesla coil for a science fair. I bought a gray colored PVC pipe to wind the secondary on. I've read on the net that I cant use this because it contains carbon. I just want to confirm this.
Also, can I bend and make a toroid for the discharge terminal (I will cover it with aluminum tape)?
Grey is better than the black pvc water pipe. It can stands a few thousand volts. Put the output terminals apart from each other as far as it can. Never use aluminum tape on toroid or any transformer,it acts like a shorted coil.
