Could electric cars be charged on the road?
What if pads where placed on some roads every few miles, that would send energy up into an electric car? They could work by sending AC electricity through the air Tesla style, like those wireless cellphone chargers.
The cars would carry little ID tags. So every time they took energy from a pad the company could collect a fee from the driver. And the driver could have an option to turn the system off if they didn't need to be charged(electrically or monetarily).

There are a lot of things that are possible that people just don't want. One of them is beaming power down to Earth from an orbital solar collector, no matter how safe you make it, it only takes one scare-monger to ensure it won't happen. That's probably the case with this idea, there are already so many E-M fields around us, natural and man-made, from microwaves to radio to cell-phones, that I doubt this would be adopted.
It's not difficult to require some standardization in batteries for electric cars, a mandate that they come in banks of a given size and weight would make it easy to pull in to a station and have a depleted bank swapped out for a fully charged one. Total time would be much less than it takes to fill your gas tank. We already do something similar with propane tanks for outdoor grilles, you take in an empty and leave with a different but full tank of gas.
In the meantime a small gas or ethanol-powered engine would be ample to re-charge a bank of batteries on the road, possibly taking that bank off-line to do so for safety reasons.
Another concern is the grid itself, if it went down and you relied on it to power your car on the road, you're stuck unless you have an alternative means of charging your own batteries.
