Can cooking oil go down then kitchn sink (garbage disposal)?

Oil like canola, veg, olive. Can shortening go down the drain. My late grand dad said it can’t but that was when i was a little kid and I am not sure if things have changed now so I have been saving some but i don’t know what to do with it.
