solar pool Frequently Asked Questions
Do solar pool covers really work?
I have a 20' x 40' inground pool, 10 feet deep at the deepest point. I live in the northeast so sometimes its super hot, but never for more than a few days at a time so the water never stays very warm.
Is a solar cover worth the investment?
I've owned a pool in the western new york area for many years, and have found that the solar cover works excellent. It will heat your pool up a few degrees, however it will keep a lot of the heat in when the temperature drops at night. It is also helpful if your pool filter is on a timer. If you can, set the timer to go on at about 2 in the afternoon for about 45 minutes. This will mix the top layer of heated water with the cooler deeper water.
I'm thinking of buying a pool solar cover and then cutting it into a few pieces to make it easier to deal with?
My pool is a modified kidney shape. It is approximately 15' across its largest width and 28' across its largest length. The idea of using a solar cover to both heat and keep heat in the Florida winter
is worrisome to me when I recall how easy the covers are to rip and how hard it is to deal with a large one (I used to have a 28' round and it was hard to roll up). So I thought maybe I could cut it
into thirds. However, the worry is that maybe separate sections would be blown over each other and
not stay in their positions. Having a mis-shapened kidney makes me think it would self-enforce positioning, but smaller width sections could be forced to flow into a larger space, if the edges of the cover don't sort of block each other.
So - has anyone already dealt with separate sections of solar cover ? And do they blow into and over each other ? Or do they stay separated ?
thanks
Charlie
Think Green, Think Solar, Save Money
More and more these days people are looking to alternative sources of energy to fit their needs. The reason for this is that people are becoming more aware of the damage being done to our environment and are taking action. This action is so important to the future generations, our kids and grandkids, that will be living here when we are gone.
One way to "think green" is solar or wind power. These are safe and efficient ways to generate or store power. With the innovation and technological advancement going on around us, solar and wind power have been made accessible to even the general public to use in our homes. With this technology readily available we need to take that next step and invest. Not only will it preserve the environment, but in the end it saves us money also.
