Why do facilities for phone companies lack windows?
Today alone, I saw four buildings. Two were for Verizon and two were for AT&T. None of the buildings had windows. One of the Verizon buildings is relatively small and near my house (in a residential area). For years I assumed it housed some sort of maintenance facility (stuff like big generators) and had no staff because the parking lot is small and usually empty.
However, in the past few days I’ve seen larger facilities with no windows–all were for phone companies and they all seem to be staffed as evidenced by their size and parking lots. What gives? Is there some aspect of the technology that is not good with windows around?
I hope this question makes sense.
The facilities you ask about exist primarily to house switching equipment. People may go in and out, but they generally don’t work there continuously.
Windows exist in buildings mainly to make them more pleasant places for people. If there are not permanent ‘residents’, then there is no need for windows. Windows are an incremental cost – both in the initial construction and also in day to day operations (more energy is lost through windows than through walls). Therefore, it there is no need for windows, they will usually be avoided.
Windows make inhabited space more pleasant. They may also be part of the ventilation strategy for the building. In some instances, windows may have a role as emergency egress – means of escape in the event of fire or some other catastrophe. Again, these are only considerations if the building is inhabited.
