I have a power inverter in my boat. It is a 750w I never noticed until today but the switch is always on. My batteries always seem to go dead. If you have a power inverter switched on with nothing plugged into it does it still invert power off the battery? So no load = power being produced? Also about how long should it take for a 750w to drain a large boat battery?
Some power is always drawn (when on) and lost in the conversion. Just turn it off when not needed, and disconnected if left for extended length of time.
If the inverter is in a hard to reach place, you can likely extend the switch to a convenient location.
My parts inverter is designed for that, and the 400W one I use can be easily modified to connect its switch where I would need it (the switch controls power to the control circuits; high current only goes to the FET drivers, which pass practically no current when off).
My inverter (switched off just with its built in toggle switch) is connected to a 35Ah battery charged with a 15W solar panel, and has always been there for me so far, for the two or so months I have had the system set up.

I have a barn without power. There was power at one time. It has lights breaker box outlets..... I bought a solar panel that is perfect for charging up car batteries. So I have 5 car batteries being charged how to I get that to go in to my Breaker? I know they sell these 75watt-3000watt inverters for trucks but that does not seem like enough. I know I cant Just hook it right in (can I?). any ideas of how to get this to work. I just want to power lights but it would be nice if I could run a saw or power toll every once in awhile.
if you only want to power filament lamps then you should be fine just connecting the batteries in series and then wiring it into the existing light circuit, although the voltage will be a little low.
A 3kW inverter would be fine for the things you mention, although then you should connect the batteries in parallel.
