A single silicon photovoltaic cell is found to have an open-circuit voltage of 0.6 V and a short-circuit current of 15 mA in full sunlight. Show how a collection of these cells can be arranged to deliver 500mW at 9.0V into a load. Write a verbal description of your solution.
first you have to calculate the voltage of the cell at peak power, and this value is about (0.8-0.85) the open cct voltage, so the output voltage of one cell is:
v=0.8*0.6=0.48 v.
the current that the cell can produce at peak power is about 0.9 the short cct current, so the output current you expect to draw is:
i=0.9*15=13.5 mA.
now you know the the voltage and current you expect from your cell you can calculate the number of cell in series to produce 9v:
9/0.48=18.75=19 cells in series.
your load is 500mW, which draws 500/9=55.55mA at 9v, the number of branches required is:
55.55/13.5=4.11 to be safe, you'll need 5 branches, each of 19 cells in series.
so, you need 5 parallel branches, each contains 19 cells in series.

Is there a way to produce photovoltaic laminates at home? It says those are cheaper and simpler than normal cells. Can you buy this things somewhere in europe?
I'm not aware of any serious installations using the type of laminates mentioned.
You can search for solar roofing tiles or roofing materials, and there are products with a similar idea.
In general, silicon thin film has historically had problems. It may be cheap, but it doesn't last. While a conventional crystalline silicon under glass panel can last for 20 or 25 years at least, the thin film of the type shown might last 3 or 4. For one thing, it's a flexible plastic-type material that is stuck onto the roof with adhesive. Over years exposed to the elements, either the plastic degrades, or the adhesive degrades.
Also note that for the entire roof that they covered, the output is "only" 2 kW. Conventional crystalline silicon would provide that power with only 1/2 to 1/3 the area.
The company in the video is Energy Conversion Devices (stock symbol ENER). You can get more information on their web page. Perhaps they conquered the degradation problem. The duration of the warranty on their product should be a good indicator of how long the company thinks it will last.
