Possible to repair LED christmas lights?
I have a 60ft string of outdoor LED christmas lights. They were OK to start with, but now some lights don't work properly. E.g. there are 10 good lights, then 10 dim ones, then 10 dark ones, then 10 good ones etc.
They run off 110V without a converter - I think they are in series-parallel. There are 2 wires to the plug, then 3 most of the way down the string, and 2 to a socket at the end to chain to another string. The LEDs appear to be glued in.
I wondered if it was possible to repair them. A traditional incandescent outdoor string would all work except broken bulbs, which could be replaced.
It sounds like there is a short somewhere in the wire. What's strange... if I'm getting this right. Is that there is a pattern of 10 good 10 dim 10 dark and then it repeats? Well I'm still in electrician school but we went over a similar scenario. A loose neutrual can and will make one light brighter and one light dimmer. If you happen to have a multimeter, test the amperage between the different lights of varying brightness. If the amperage is fluctuating than it is a loose N wire. To fix this? That would take some trouble shooting, an experianced electrician could probably identify it quickly. I personally can't say where the bad connection would be. All that I can tell you is that my speculation is a loose N. Check the wire, typically this faulty connection occurs within the wire itself and not at the bulb portion but I feel in this case the glue could of played a role with a bad connection. Id really need to see it. Sorry I can't help much more, good luck.

Ooh how pretty - how about making a sort of wigwam with bamboo canes and a child's hoop - you could use those little wire ties you can get for freezer bags to attach the lights? That is probably the way I would go about it - you could use a heat -proof tinsel to cover the bamboo/hoop too. Good luck - will you post a piccie so we can see how you did?
