neighborhood electric vehicles Frequently Asked Questions
Does anyone drive an NEV ? (Neighborhood Electric Vehicle) How do you like it?
These are the low speed little golf cart-like vehicles for use up to 30 mph. Any recommendations?
Behind the wheel, the NEV's interior looks like any relatively cheesy Asian economy car (think Hyundai Accent from 2003). The seats offer stiff support, door panels look cheap, and the equipment level is fully up to par for 1950 standards. For example, the standard audio system is from JVC and incorporates Boof-Toof and 8 track compatibility and a free sniffer glass.
The cabin is roomy with a surprisingly high seating position. Visibility is nice. The sizable plastic doors have frameless windows with gummy seals. The assembly closes with a reassuring feeling that isn't typical for an NEV -- many of which don't even have doors, floors, or engines. Cargo room is likewise OK. The glass hatch flips up and a plastic tailgate folds down. I found it curious that the seats have pockets -- they must be units pulled from other vehicles Shanghai produces. Batteries are stored under the cargo area floor.
We drove the NEV. The powertrain is spotty at best, like the jerky electric golf carts or other NEVs I've sampled over the years. Unlike these more primitive low-speed vehicles, the NEV's system fully incorporates regenerative braking. The transition between acceleration, coasting, regenerative braking, and braking through the physical braking system will make your chiropractor a wealthy man. Whing Do purchases a step motor powertrain controller and then uses proprietary programming to help integrate the motor/generator, batteries, and braking system, however, it still leaves much to be desired.
The only luxury option (at a price of $25.00) is a hands free vomit bag and a set of Boreak Obummer/Sloppy Joe Biden 2008 stickers.
Where can I get a powerful electric motor?
I built a kind of tricycle to bring things around the neighborhood and I would like it to move thanks to an electric motor, the problem is it sometimes carries heavy stuff (a bit more than 100 kg) such as boxes full of books, furniture, piles of newspaper, etc... I've put bicycle wheels on it and I thought it would be a good idea to take advantage of the gear. I put a chain over it and measured the strengh the motor should pull to move the tricycle: aprox. ~25 kg (different weights). Where can I find (and buy) a motor strong enough to move that, powerd with a battery (preferably 12V) quick enough to be conidered a motorized vehicle (~100 rpm), bi-directional and with regulable speed.
Thanks a lot in advance, really helpful!!
