The red colour is very specific and if it's not sold as suitable for photographic use, then it's not.
These are all simply "household" bulbs.
You need a specific "Darkroom" bulb, like these...
I can truly say I hate my pot lights as they are. They look great but they burn out all the time and they take a medium base bulb which are really hard to find. Last night my husband and I bought a Philips Ambient LED R20 Indoor Flood bulb as an experiment. It works great and I think it could really make us fall in love with our pot lights again. However, the LED bulbs are not compatible with the current cap on the lights. The bulb is too chubby for the inner ring, but not big enough to sit in the outer shell without the inner ring. Is it possible to buy just a new cap without buying the can hardware? How else could we adapt our current hardware for these new bulbs?
I am talking about recessed pot lights. And it's not the socket that is the problem, that fits fine, it's the cap at the bottom that doesn't fit.
They are still a bit costly up front, but you can buy a range of bulb configurations now in higher lumen output LED's including this standar A-lamp model:
It does seem outrageous initially to pay $50 for a light bulb but once you figure the savings in both lower electricity usage (about 1/4 of what your old bulbs used, not to mention reduced air conditioning needs due to lower heat output) and the fact that a 50,000 hour LED will outlast a dozen or more incandescent lamps, it will pay for itself within 4 or 5 years and after that it's like having permanent nearly free lighting.
And, yes, if you have a decent name brand recessed pot light (Halo, Lightolier, Progress, etc.) the trim rings are typically interchangeable with a variety of styles fitting any given housing. Look up inside and get the manufacturer and stock number from the label and then take it to a lighting supply store with the new bulb that you like and see if there is another trim that will work.
