it electric car Frequently Asked Questions
How statisfying is it that the companies that killed the electric car are now going broke?
talk about wonderful karma
have a look at "who killed the electric car"

What bugs is how the gov let them kill it. The car companies had to agree to promote the cars with an ad campaign. Of course, the ad campaign was designed to make sure the cars didn't sell.
I saw "Who Killed the Electric Car" just outside of liberal Cambridge, MA. Of course the audience was filled with people who were at least open to the idea of an electric car, and within a few minutes, the film had nearly everyone wishing they had one.
Later on, they showed the commercials and magazine ads designed to "sell" the cars. They were so deliberately awful that the EC-friendly audience erupted in laughter. The ad campaign even turned off a bunch of Massachusetts liberals!
BTW, I see at least one answerer and absorbed the anti-EC talking points disseminated through the right wing news media as part of a campaign to scuttle the cars. That's in the film too.
would you buy and electric car? I have read that it will run 40 miles until a small gas engine kicks in..?
Short answer -no. Reason - the batteries. I've owned an electric vehicle for over 15 years, and for two of those years tried using it for a 40 mile round trip daily commute. Granted, I had a larger than normal battery pack that could easily do twice that range, but the batteries (lead acid golf cart batteries) would only hold up for a year of use at most before requiring replacement - so every year I had to pop for nearly $2000 in one shot to replace the battery pack - totally wiped out any savings as far as fuel costs.
Granted, a hybrid such as the Chevy Volt or Toyota Prius has more advanced batteries wih a longer life, but sooner or later they're going to die off - and those advanced batteries are horrendously expensive compared to the golf cart batteries I used. Toyota has dropped to only a 3 year/36K mile warranty on their battery packs - anything past that, you eat the cost for replacing it. The cost for replacing the battery pack on one of these when 3 or more years old would be far more than what the car itself was still worth. And how much trade-in value do you think a hybrid with a dead battery pack would have? I've already seen used Honda Civic hybrids on Auto trader, only a few years old and very low miles at a very low price - with a note in the description "needs new battery pack".
If you're only looking at leasing one for 3 to 5 years and then turning it back in, you'd still be OK. But if you're looking at buying one outright for the long haul, ie 5 to 10 years or more, IMHO you're asking for trouble.
