If water is a hybrid of hydrogen and oxygen, why can't we drink pure hydrogen or pure oxygen?
Water is a COMPOUND of Hydrogen and Oxygen.
When the atoms of these elements chemically bond together to form molecules of water their properties are completely changed.
As an example Sodium is a reactive, corrosive metal (look up its reaction with water!)
Chlorine is a poisonous, green gas (used to gas soldiers in World War 1 would you believe!)
If sodium bonds to chlorine we get a white crystal solid called sodium chloride - common salt for your food!
Why isn't the US even trying to be less dependent on oil?
The US is the b*tch of the the shieks, Iran, and Hugo Chavez because of oil executives' greed. The US got jumped into Iraq over oil, give me a break about all the other baloney reasons. Does the govt think we are stupid? We are all consuming oil, even lots of treehuggers are driving oil burning cars around. Sorry, I went off on a tangent.
These oil people have sold out their own country to make a buck (many many bucks).
What is the hold up with mass producing hybrid cars? People would buy them if they were affordable. Don't give me the "we are waiting for hydrogen fuel cell technology" because that is YEARS away. Hybrids are not the best technology, but they are here NOW. Just mass produce the damn things already.
We are trying. If you look at the gas pump next time, you will see that it contains 10-15% ethanol, (federally mandated).
New automobiles are designed to run on up to 85% ethanol. There are hundreds of ethanol plants currently operating in the US and hundreds more being built. We cannot keep up with ethanol demand, and therefore have to import much of it, at a greater cost. If you consider that the US is larger in population and roadway than all of Europe, you have to realize why we are the largest consumer of crude oil in the world. It is also a fact that we import most of our crude oil from Mexico & Canada, (followed by Venezuella, Saudi Arabia, Nigeria).
The government does not force people to choose whether or not to buy a Hybrid, that is driven by market demand, but they do offer tax credits, (or at least used to), for environmentally friendly cars.
I would also love to see us get off of foreign oil, but we are so extremely dependent on it, that it will take some time, kind of like steering the Titanic away from an iceberg.
