What are the cons of cars with hydrogen internal combustion engines?
I've been researching hydrogen cars for a project and I don't understand why all the focus is being put on hydrogen fuel cell electric cars instead of hydrogen internal combustion engines. As I understand it, regular old internal combustion engines like we use in all gasoline cars can be modified to burn hydrogen instead, so it seems weird to me that people are focusing so much on fuel cells, which have flaws of their own, like the fact that they use platinum which is really expensive. So why aren't car manufacturers just making cars with a normal internal combustion engine that burns hydrogen instead of gas? Why the fuel cells instead?
There are many technical issues to solve before hydrogen can be used to drive vehicles efficiently and economically, but as I read your question you want to know why the ICE is not as good as or better than a fuel cell for turning hydrogen into motion.
The reasons are efficiency, the nature of the fuel and pollution.
Efficiency is very important for hydrogen vehicles because hydrogen does not exist freely on Earth.1 A fuel cell standing alone can have some theoretically reasonably high efficiencies (around 80%) while in a practical vehicle these tend to come in around 50%. By the time you take other factors into consideration you are looking at around 30% efficiency overall. Part of this efficiency is because the electric drive train is amazingly efficient with electric motors often above 90% efficiency. By comparison the Diesel engine has a can reach efficiencies approaching 40% so that by the time rubber meets the road you may be looking at efficiencies of 20 to 25%. Hydrogen in an ICE will be used in an engine giving it an efficiency no better than gasoline or around 15% at the wheels.
Octane determines if a fuel can be used in the more efficient high compression diesel engine or a spark ignited petrol style engine, but "Hydrogen does not fit well into the normal definitions of octane number. It has a very high RON and a low MON,[11] so that it has low knock resistance in practice,[12] due to its low ignition energy (primarily due to its low dissociation energy) and extremely high flame speed. These traits are highly desirable in rocket engines, but undesirable in Otto-cycle engines." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Octane_rating So Hydrogen is not really a good fit for an ICE.
It is said that hydrogen does not pollute. But burning any fuel in an ICE does. "Under the high pressure and temperature conditions in an engine, nitrogen and oxygen atoms in the air react to form various nitrogen oxides, collectively known as NOx. Nitrogen oxides, like hydrocarbons, are precursors to the formation of ozone. Hydrogen in an ICE pollutes. Hydrogen in fuel cells don't share this problem.

It's not really a question of "which is cheaper", it's a question of "which exists". Have you ever seen a hydrogen fuel station? There are like two in the entire country.
Until we can figure out how to make, transport and store the incredible amounts of hydrogen required to replace gasoline, your shiny new fuel cell car will just be sitting in your garage. You're much better off buying an electric or hybrid.
If we do manage to solve the problem of distributing hydrogen, then yes it probably will be cheaper than oil in the future. Oil is only going to get more and more expensive as time goes on, but hopefully with good investment hydrogen technology will advance in time to take its place.
