it works just like any other Otto cycle gasoline engine.
Very non-detailed: air and fuel (H2) are drawn into the cylinder as the piston goes down through the intake valve. Near the bottom of travel of the piston, the intake valve closes. The piston goes up, compressing the air-fuel mixture, near the top, a spark plug ignites the mixture, which burns very quickly (not quite exploding), the expanding gas pushes the piston down. Near the bottom, the exhaust valve open, the exhaust is pushed out the valve as the piston rises. Near the top, the exhaust valve closes, and the intake opens, and the cycle repeats.
This is how the BMW hydrogen V12 works. There are other ways to make engines.
im looking for resources where i can buy engines that run off hydrogen?
must run completely off hydrogen, and not a mixture. Preferably something that will fit a Ford or a chevy Where can i find these engines? If bush made a push for it, then why so hard to find?

The technology involved in producing and storing Hydrogen just doesn't sound like the sort of thing one does in their back yard, and the relative size of hydrogen tanks doesn't seem ideal for a post apocalyptic cross country jaunt. Both electric and hydrogen cars have problems with refilling in the field, they don't have a simple Jerry can counterpart. Why not store a few hundred gallons of gasoline or diesel in underground tanks. A diesel truck modified to handle fossil or bio fuel would seem to have the most options in a self sufficiency world.
There are a couple of companies doing full Internal Combustion Engine Hydrogen conversions (not the run off water guys), I understand the more percussive burning pattern of hydrogen requires some beefing up of the engine.
Of course the oil men are pushing the zero emission hydrogen fuel cell electric car, who's cost effectiveness is still years down the road.
