Best Battery Backup for Home use? (NOT a generator, but a generator-like battery)?
I have an APC battery backup for my laptop and peripherals when there is a power outage or just a short interuption. What I was wondering is: Is there a similar type backup battery that would power a lamp, TV, radio, anything you can PLUG IN (low voltage) and any other household appliance (not super high output like a microwave, of course) for a couple of hours? Does such a thing exist? I was looking at this (Black & Decker 400-Watt Electromate with Radio #PS400JRB) and that seems pretty good, but is there anything that’s even bigger/better?
I’m trying to keep cost to a minimum ($80-$150). I want only to run a TV, a lamp maybe for maybe an hour, while power is restored. I’m not thinking of disaster or any long-term power outage.
inverter systems of the type used with solar systems can deliver higher power. with 12 volt batteries, you can expect about 1 KW. the run time depends on the size and number of batteries connected. Wyoming Public Radio has a UPS running at 48 volts from the batteries and delivers about 4 KW to the loads. The battery bank can run for about 8 hours, and this is backed up by a 48 volt DC propane powered generater for continuous run. The batteries need to be heafty size and ventilated or stored outside because they can give off explosive gas.
