green energy use Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Obama keep going around telling people we need green energy?
The only way green energy can break even is if our tax dollars are used to subsidize it.
The only green energy plan he has is to make us pay more money to use existing technology.
Why is he so misleading?
Whether you believe it or not coal and oil reserves will eventually run out.
I'd prefer not to have to go back to candles and horses.
Are "green" shopping bags really better for the environment?
I know the theory behind the bags, and it sounds great, but is it really working? I work at a store that offers the green bags, but the problem is I rarely see customers reusing them. We sell a lot, mostly impulse buys, but very few bags seem to be coming back into the store to get reused. If people use them only once or even just a few times, it seems that they would be much worse for the environment. I imagine they require a lot more material and energy to create, and would take longer to decompose. Have you bought green bags before? If so, do you actually reuse them?
I believe people buy the reusable bags with good intentions. However, I speak from experience, it was difficult to make the transition from paper and plastic to the reusable ones. The problem I encountered was simply to remember to bring the bags with me into the store. I tried putting them on the passenger seat, I tried putting the bags on my lap. I tried resting them on my shoulder. What I found is that when I'm going to the store my mind is on the grocery items and my shopping intentions. In the meantime I would unconscously place the bags back on the seat of the car. I could not remember to bring those bags from the car into the store if my life depended on it. I got a new purse that had a sunglasses compartment. What I did was to put three of the bags into that sunglass compartment. Then I had the bags with me when I was in the check out line. As soon as I emptied the bags when I got home they went right back into the sunglasses compartment of my purse. Consequently, I always had them with me when I needed them. That was a few years ago. I have finally used them now for long enough so that I remember to bring them with me when I leave the car and go into the store.
Energy: There is the big debate whether paper or plastic is worse for the environment. Paper uses more trees but plastic makes more pollution during manufacturing. Plastic bags are a notorious source of global trash. Because of this plastic bags have been banned in China. It is not uncommon to see pictures of animals being strangled or suffocated ect by plastic bags.
Getting into the routine of using reusable bags is a process like any conscious changes one makes in life. It takes a focused effort to change the habit.
The stores I shop at will give me a nickle off every time I use one of my bags. Obviously saving the nickle wouldn't make or break my budget, but I wanted to see if I could get the bags to pay for themselves. So I counted the nickles I got back when using them, until it equaled the cost of the bag. They have paid for themselves two times over.
Use of Reusable bags are a reflection of your communities values. If the company believes using them is a good thing then offering customers incentives to use them is a way to encourage good behavior. However, if grocery stores started charging customers a dollar for each plastic or paper bag they gave out with groceries, I bet we would see a dramatic increase in the use of reusable bags. In other words costing money would probably be the best incentive to change customers behavior. However, the only way this would work is if all the stores agreed to charge the same amount. Otherwise you would just loose your customer to a store that didn't charge for the bags.
I feel really good about having made this change. I use these woven stretchy bags and I love them. They work just great and I find they are easier to use than the paper or plastic ones.
The key to getting past this hurdle is getting the bags from the car into the store. I don't know, maybe if the store put a big sign on the side of the building that faces the parking lot above the entrance that says "Did you remember to bring your reusable bags" it might help bridge this gap. For me it was the sunglasses compartment.
