going green cleaning Frequently Asked Questions
What is your favorite green home cleaner?
I'm going to be placing an order from a place that has a pretty large selection and I'm looking for suggestions.
Thanks
I'm not a germ freak, I'm a can't tolerate grease on my counters and glass stove freak, ha ha
For general purpose cleaning I use a squirt of lavender castille soap, a cup of vinegar and water in a spray bottle. I buy baking soda in bulk and use it to sprinkle on rugs to deodorize, I put it in a powdered sugar shaker. I also put it in cloth bags in the refrigerator, you can find spice bags in the kitchen dept. they work well, I also use it on my stainless pots, stove top and oven when I bet baked on stuff. I spray with my general cleaner then sprinkle the baking soda let it sit for 15-30 minutes and it usually just wipes right off. I use a vinegar and water solution to wash windows. For my machines I use store bought products. I've been happy with both Ecover and Seventh Generation for my clothes and dishwashers. I use vinegar in the rinse cycle for both machines as well. If you line dry clothes vinegar works as a fabric softener, if you don't have a place to put liquid fabric softener, you can buy the Downy ball and just use vinegar in it. I have switched to non chlorine bleach, I'm pretty sure I use Ecover, but I rarely use bleach so I didn't pay much attention. I use Begely's best for my laundry pre-treater I use Bon Ami and have for years to clean the toilets and bathtub. I use Mrs. Meyer's clean day freshening spray instead of Fabreeze. It's safe to spray on fabrics.
I have always been much more of a soap and water type of cleaner than a strong chemical type, so I have been very happy with my home recipes. I also suggest making a few changes at a time, it seems to be easier on the wallet and that way you don't have a house full of products you don't like.
I am looking for simple and affordable ways to help going green?
I have no recycling available in my area, and to drive that far would waste fuel.
These are two things I am doing that are easy.
Using clean and refillable water bottles, and buys by the gallon or more. No water bottles to trash.
Using shopping bags, I purchased two reusable bags for 99c each. Every time you use them you save 3c and no more plastic bags.
Give more ideas, please.
I live on a fixed income in rural Nevada, where recycling is neither required nor mandatory. I have a Safeway 15 miles away. Then the Wal-Mart is 75 miles away. Reno is 140 and Las Vegas is 300mi. So traveling doesn't work for me. That is the price I pay to live a quiet live in the high dessert. So I need simple lifestyles changes to make differences for our planet.
