german diesel cars Frequently Asked Questions

Shaking idle, but smooth cruise? Mercedes diesel?

I have a 1982 Mercedes 300TD and it shakes violently at idle, but cruises very nicely at part throttle and above. It does have a WVO set-up, but this happens when using either diesel or WVO. I'm not too experience with diesels nor German cars, so I'm hoping I can get some help. I am mechanically inclined so I can do decent work if need be.

Mine had shaky idle.If the rack damper bolt on the rear of injection pump is not gold colored, you probably need a new one. Before you do that make sure valves are adjusted, tight valves give bad idle.If over 200,000 miles it probably needs injectors.Make sure timing chain was changed at 200,000 miles.Diesels don't build vaccum, thats why a vaccum pump.
These older diesel are bullet proof and nuke proof, no stupid electronics.

Confused between choosing a car -- VW or Honda or Subaru?

Iam planning to buy a new car and after investigating I have shorlisted
these models.I like VW- Jetta TDI because it is a german car with a Diesel engine. My worry with this is will it make big sound as its diesel and how good will it be.Then Honda Accord I love the look of it and performance as you know we cant complain on it.Disadvantages is that its a luxury car and need a Premium Petrol,so confused on it.Then Subaru,it is a All wheel drive and has highest safety rating.Disadvantages is will use more petrol bcoz if it.So now you guys can you please choose me decide on these cars as am totally confused as which one to choose. All have good and bad so please need your best suggestion before I make a decision. Thanks for ur patience in reading and replying.
By the way I live in Australia...
I don't have snow here. Now Iam left with 2 choices after reading VW TDI or Accourd Euro :)

First off I think you should forget about VW TDI. It is often hard finding diesel gas. If you are traveling long distance, sometime you may find it hard to find diesel in a new town.

The Honda accord is not a "luxury" car. I used own one and I am pretty sure it uses regular gas. Please double check. If this is your only problem, then it is not a problem. :-)

The Subaru all wheel drives are only really useful in snowy areas. I live here in NYC and I drive a Honda Civic and Audi A4 (all wheel drive). There's only about 2 or 3 times a year when I HAVE to drive the Audi because of snow. Unless you got lots of mud road, of course. But boy let me tell you, that AWD is super. It could even clime a 30 degree ramp (unplowed with 8 inches of snow).

So do you have lots of snow?

Somebody below wrote that AWD is safer. NO! You do not anything extra (in terms of safety) with AWD. You get that from ABS brakes. In fact few winters back, local news station did a story that too many people think that their SUV with AWD is some how safer. They driver faster in snow in SUV causing more accidents. As the reporter was saying this, a SUV spun out behind her (accross the street) and hit a pole.
