gasoline hybrid cars Frequently Asked Questions
What is the mpg comparison from hybrids and regular gasoline cars?
What is the mpg comparison from hybrids and regular gasoline cars? For instance toyota's prius and any other car you can think of! Thanks for your help.
There are nearly 2 dozen hybrid vehicles available. Not all hybrids are created equal. (Different manufacturers use different hybrid systems, and some are more tuned for performance than for fuel economy...) Which one are you trying to compare?
Each government has their own fuel economy tests, which are applied to all cars equally so that you can compare one car against another. The manufacturers are required by law to only post the governmental test results. So, you can compare the MPG for yourself.

I need someone far more business minded to help with this question about gasoline, energy, etc...?
Okay, we started out with hybrid cars like the Honda Insight...which got about 70 MPG and the first Toyota Prius which got about 65MPG. Regular gasoline cars like the Civic, Accord, several Toyotas, the Ford Escort, etc...they were getting about 30-40 MPG.
Now, as technology increases and fuel prices increase...why is it that hybrid cars are crappier than ever getting only 35-45MPG on average, nothing new is coming out, and regular gasoline vehicles are still getting 35-40 MPG?
Shouldn't regular gas cars be becoming more efficient with newer technology and shouldn't hybrids be amazing in their fuel effeciency? I just bought a Honda Fit that only gets 30 MPG...my 1987 Civic got 35!!!!
I just need someone to explain to me why this is. It seems rediculous to me and I can't find any logical explanation.
The only problem is that diesel fuel is almost $0.80 more per gallon! So you save only about $1.00 per 100 miles...
Well, there was the Clean Air Act in 1992, which put stricter air pollution controls on cars. There have also been newer safety regulations (such as seat belts, air bags, tire pressure monitors, and bumper crash resistance, for example), that have added weight to the vehicles. In general, cars have been getting heavier over the years, with more added horsepower, and with more added standard safety/emissions equipment, and more convienence items on the car. Heavier cars will get lower fuel economy.
There was a large advertisement campaign recently, noting that the Ford Model T got 25mpg, while the fleet average of cars 100 years later is less than that...
Typically, a hybrid car gets better fuel economy, emissions, and power, than a comparable gasoline-only model. Just how much depends on the type of hybrid design employed and if it is tuned more for efficiency or for power. (For example, same design for both Toyota and Lexus, but the Lexus are tuned for power as opposed to the Toyotas for efficiency.)
Even still, in their size classes the hybrid models tend to have the best fuel economy of all vehicles offered in the US:

Also, you seem to be mixing up your fuel economy ratings. The EPA testing procedure changed for the 2008 model year. ALL cars are measured in a laboratory under a specified driving pattern by the EPA. The new 2008 testing procedures adds in extra testing for higher speeds/acceleration, colder temperatures, and AC use, which the older tests did not. ALL cars, not just the hybrids, had their MPG go down in 2008.
http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/ratings2008.shtml
http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/fe_test_schedules.shtml
and the EPA has updated their site with all of the older cars' MPG figures readjusted to be comparable with the new testing.
