gasoline electric car Frequently Asked Questions

What is the MPGE (MPG equivalent) for an electric car that draws 15A 120VDC in 47KPH steady driving?

There is a series-hybrid electric/gasoline car ..

http://www.futurevehicletechnologies.com/

.. that claims to get 275 MPG-E for city driving.

Another vehicle, the Revived Battery Electric Pickup ..

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=low+amp+draw+electric+pickup&aq=0&oq=LOW+AMP+DRA&aqi=g1

.. draws only 15A at 120VDC at 47 KPH driving on flat roads.

The "Revived Battery Electric Pickup" with its LOW AMP DRAW TECHNOLOGY can be converted into a series-hybrid by adding a gasoline, propane, or natural gas generator on the truck bed and running the genset while operational. Just like the eVaro.

Which vehicle is more economical, using MPGE?

How is MPGE, for an electric vehicle calculated, anyway?

Last question first. Since gasoline is measured in gallons and electricity is measured in KWh there does not seem to be a way to compare the two until you arrive at a common unit of measure. The energy equivalent is a proper measure. The American unit is the BTU or British Thermal Unit. There are formulas to compare the two but a table is more convenient. This table may be found in several places but here is one of the most detailed: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gasoline-equivalent_gallon The table tells us that gasoline contains 114,000 BTU and electricity requires 33.4 KWh to equal one gallon of gasoline.

The next question is what is going to be included in the analysis. Some Volt advertisements gave mileages for this vehicle counting only the miles traveled and the actual gasoline used and not the energy that came from plugging in the vehicle. This is misleading at best and deceptive at worse.

Regenerative braking captures the inertia of the vehicle that was put there by the original powering of the vehicle. It makes a vehicle more efficient and should be generally included as we don't use vehicles without brakes. This is one reason why the vehicle you cited above only gets 165 miles on the highway but 265 in the city. ICE vehicles could do the same trick by spinning up flywheels or compressing air that could later be used to start the vehicle. This would however require another complex system on an already complex vehicle.

In your example 15A at 120 VDC equals 1800 watts. We need to arrive at a total energy usage for a distance traveled. If the vehicle were to travel for 1 hour it would go 47 Km and use 1800 watts for one hour or 1.8 KWh. As it takes 33.4 KWh to equal one gallon of gasoline in that time the vehicle would travel 33.4/1.8 x 47 = 872 Km.
1 kilometer = (0.621371192 miles.) x 872 = 541 miles to one gallon. That is quite a claim, but it doesn't include any starting, and getting up to spee. These would naturally decrease milage. It exceeds the other claim of 275 city miles, but we also don't know how that was arrived at.

Best R/C car for about $500?

Hey guys, I always wanted to get me one of those R/C drifting sports cars that can go like 45mph and I can mess around with them in a parking lot. Can someone point me to a good website where I can buy some nice r/c cars? I'm leaning towards buying a gasoline powered one, but is that the best way to go or should I get electric? I'm really a noob on this subject so any help would be appreciated. Also, can I mount any type of car body on top of it? thanks.

If you are wanting a drifting type, I would not get gas b/c you will just blow the engine up very quickly. There are serveral companies that make drift specific R/C's all of them are electric. One of the best distributors to buy from online is http://www.Towerhobbies.com and a company calles HPI
( http://www.HPIRacing.com ) makes several drift specific cars and a very big selection of bodies to fit on top. If you have any questions or want any advice feel free to e-mail me.
