fuel consumption cars Frequently Asked Questions

Effect of passengers on fuel consumption in cars?

When a car manufacturer gives the fuel consumption on a car like, for example 20 miles/gal, is this the rating for a full-load of passengers or for a single person (driver). How does adding people (or weight for that matter) affect the fuel consumption of a car? Is there a way to compute this (or at least a link to a website that has charts or calculators for such).? Thanks.
Of course I know adding more weight will worsen fuel-economy, but I'd like to find out by how much...like: how much each added pound affects miles per gallon.

Best way to solve your mathematical problem would be rounding up your friends and do the calculating yourself. Basic consumption would be for a single passenger at a certain speed without the airconditioner.

Is buying a diesel car really saves a lot of money due to the low fuel consumption or..?

is there any distavantage like not being able to drive 120 km/hour comfortably or different higher maintenance costs compared to regular car? I need a car for a real estate investment budsiness. Another question is do you recommend that I lease or buy. The car will be used by me for business purposes. THANKS

While diesel engines do, generally, get better fuel economy than gas engines, it's just not that much better. Since the cost of diesel fuel is usually higher than the cost of unleaded, any fuel economy savings are going to be offset by the higher cost of fuel.

Also, the initial cost of a diesel engine vehicle is more than that of an equivalent gas engine vehicle. It costs more to make a diesel engine. Along with that, you have to remember that the cost of maintenance parts is higher with a diesel engine. Even a simple oil filter costs more.

What diesels DO have is a higher life expectancy and greater low-end torque than a gas engine. It's not unusual for diesels to go 200,000 - 300,000 miles without the need of overhaul and rebuilding.

My advice: if you're getting a car, stick with a gas engine. Costs are lower. If you're getting a truck, and you're going to be regularly pulling large, or heavy, loads, get a diesel.
