What are the problems that scientists still need to solve in reducing emissions from cars?
They have catalytic converters but are there any problems that still need solving?
Basically, the problems in reducing emissions are:
1. Cost
2. Efficiency
3. Carbon oxides
4. Consumers
Catalytic converters use platinum and platinum is expensive. In addition, they can become contaminated by stuff in the fuel (this is one of the reasons that lead isn't used in gasoline anymore)
While catalytic converters are efficient, when you're talking about millions of cars, even a little bit adds up. So, researchers are looking for ways to increase the efficiency
One of the big problem of emissions is, what to do with carbon. Left in a gas state, you get carbon oxides, mainly carbon dioxide which (in addition to its role in global warming) is very hard to break apart into its component elements. And, if you do, you are left with solid carbon in a powdery form. What are you going to do with that?
Finally, the biggest problem with controlling emissions is the consumer. The more you try to clean up car emissions, the more it costs and the less the consumers want to use it. Also, many 'clean up' technologies effect a car's performance and many consumers don't want that either.
