You can slide the gearshift over and push it up or down to manually select the next gear but it still uses the torque converter just like an automatic. You also can not stay in something like 5th gear while at a stoplight or go to 1st gear while on the highway. It is idiot proof for the most part. I feel if you want to shift, get a manual.
Why can't a self-powered power supply be built?
A person can buy a power generator that runs on gasoline at a hardware store. The engine powers a generator that charges batteries, that supplies electric to 2-3 or more outlets.
My question is, why couldn't a generator be built that used a low amp electric motor instead? My theorized generator would be composed of a car's alternator(s), an electric motor, 1 or 2 car batteries, and a power convertor(s). The convertors are available at any Wal-Mart and have 3 outlets on them? Why couldn't the motor run the alternator(s) which would charge the battery (batteries), and power 2 more outlets? Wouldn't this be a power supply that would generate its own fuel? As long as the demand didn't exceed the supply of elecric, why wouldn't this work?
Here's the basic law of physics involved: Energy cannot be created nor destroyed. Energy is only converted.
A gas engine convert's gasoline's energy into kinetic energy (motion) and heat. A generator converts kinetic energy into electricity.
Using a motor to power a generator converts electricity into motion, and then motion back into electricity. Since you can't create any new energy, there can be no gain. And some of the energy will be converted into heat, so even if it were very efficient, the apparatus would eventually slow down and stop.
