Why aren't more cars made with diesel engines? The engines last longer because diesel is a lubricant. What is
the downside? I know it takes a little time to start the engine on cold mornings, but other than that what are the negatives? Is it because of the availability of dliesel? Do cars get better mileage using diesel?
Diesel engines are dirty. The fuel is WAY more crude and WAY less refined than gasoline. Also, EVERYONE is in a rush, and letting their cars warm up is out of the question for almost anyone now a days, so gasoline is the better choice, because they won't kill their valve cover gaskets quite as fast. As for mileage, they normally get better mileage, but when it comes to repairs, the cost of parts is WAY higher than gasoline engine parts, so it is just as cheap to run a gasoline engine.

It really depends on which make and model it is. Just like gasoline-engine vehicles, some diesels are built better than others. Also, how the engine ( and the rest of the vehicle ) has been maintained up until this point is also a big factor in the vehicle's future reliability/longevity.
Having said that, diesels, generally, last a long time. I've seen some diesels reach the 500K km club and they're still going strong.
