Please could you help me to calculate the car and fuel benefit?
Throughout the year, Steve had use of a diesel-engine company car that had a list price of £18,000 when new. It has a CO2 emission rating of 172g/km. The company pays all the running costs, including the fuel. Steve pays his company £100 per month as contribution for the private usage of the car.

You do not specify which tax year you are talking about. Let's assume it is 2009/10 (it sounds like a theoretical question, rather than current factual).
The car benefit is 22% of the list price, so 22% of £18,000 = £3,960.
From this you need to deduct the contribution made of £1,200.
The fuel benefit is calculated in a similar fashion - 22% of £16,900 = £3,718.
Should you actually be looking at 2010/11 then the percentage to use is 23% and the fuel benefit is based on a value of £18,000.

I do know some stuff about diesel powered cars like they can run on vegetable oil and all that other stuff. and i know that diesel is more expensive then gasoline. I'm thinking of buying a truck and cant decide between diesel or gasoline.

I have a diesel VW Jetta.
It rocks.
I get between 42 and 55 mpg depending on how I drive, and whether or not I warm it up before I go. It's 10,000 miles between oil changes and I can go 600 miles on a fillup. (The longest was about 630 miles, but I must admit I was nervous about being stuck on the side of the road for that one.)
The 100 hp engine has lots of torque so it performs like a sportscar.
In Europe you can get diesel cars that exceed 90 mpg, but they're illegal here because of "pollution control." -- No, I'm not kidding.
Ford makes a car that gets better than 50 MPG in the UK, but it's not available for sale in the USA for the same reasons.
Diesel is much less expensive to run than other vehicles, they last longer, and have fewer moving parts to maintain, the fuel is ignited by compression alone, so there's no ignition system at all. They run cooler so the metal fatigue and lubrication fatigue from heat isn't nearly as bad.
(And no interference on AM radio from the ignition system either.)
