dc to dc inverters Frequently Asked Questions
How can i know if MPPT is done by inverter or DC-DC Buck converter in solar system?
I have a schematic in which solar panels are connected to inverter and then connected to AC load. Its not connected to grid. I am not sure whether first Maximum power point tracking is done and then fed into the inverter or inverter all alone can do the MPP tracking.?
The inverter connected is :
Sunny Boy 6000 series:
Help appreciated.
The Sunny Boy 6000 is a grid-tied inverter - it will not work if it is not tied to the grid.
MPPT is a feature inherent in pretty much all modern inverters of reasonable size. There are certain loading conditions which will extract maximum power from the panels. The inverter adjusts its load to achieve that. It's all done inside the inverter.
2-5HP DC, High Torque, Low(ish) RPM motor?
I'm looking for a motor that is around 2-5HP. I Really would like it to be DC (I'm going to run it off a couple of batteries, and I dont want to buy an inverter). I'm going to be using the motor to run a track system for an R/C Tank (so I'm going to buying at least two), so I would need the max RPM to be around 200-350 to get the speed I want. I'm hoping someone can point me in the direction of a relatively cheap motor; anywhere from $50 to $150 per motor. I have done a lot of searching on eBay and other sites like it, but they irritate me too much. They are always changing, I would like to buy the motor from a company of some sort (so they don't have a motor one day, then it's gone the next). So if anyone has any suggestions, please do tell. Thanks!
I suspect that most motors are higher RPM than this, so a motor gearbox combination is better. You will then be looking at a bigger motor to make up for maybe 30% gear losses, unless it is rated for the output from the gearbox. At 12 volts a 5 HP motor is unlikely. This is more than 311 Amps. Therefore you will be looking at a higher voltage battery to reduce the current to a reasonable value like 50 Amps. Really this is a high demand for a battery system. It must be a huge tank!
How did you derive these figures? They should come from the force you wish to push something with (as in a wall), and the acceleration rate as change in speed in a given time for the all up mass involved, and the losses while it is moving along due to friction etc, and how fast it will climb a hill as a given mass a given climb against gravity for a given time. Calculate all these and select the biggest for the motor size. Also decide whether this is for one or two motors.
One horsepower will lift 550 pounds weight one foot in one second, or the equivalent. Thus 2 x 5 Hp motors can lift about a ton 1 foot in 1 second. But the motors, batteries etc would weigh quite a bit. These are the tradeoffs you need to make, as a series of calculations converging on the answer. If you say that that 2 x 5HP motor and its batteries and the chassis and tracks weigh 550 pounds it looks like being able to climb 10 feet in one second.
It seems to me that larger battery drills with a slow speed gear will be adequate for most sizes of tank. These may be approaching a half HP, and are designed for efficiency. They even have a speed controller of sorts built in. A 3/8 inch drill can be 1/4 HP. I wouldn't think that was a continuous rating, but your tank only needs full power in short bursts.
The link below shows a really top end cordless drill with 80Nm torque at 450 RPM which implies 3.76KW or 5 HP, obviously that is more than you need. Note the 36 V battery implies about 100 Amps, which wouldn't last long with a 2Ah battery.
Formula for power from torque and RPM:
Power_KW = (torque_N.m x 2pi x RPM) / 60000
Hope this helps.
