What is your city doing to be green & sustainable?
I'm just curious to see what other cities around the world are proposing to improve their city's infrastructure to become more sustainable. Best answer will go to the answer with quality resources linked.
Portland, OR seems to be known for it's green mindedness.
-Portland is super public transit friendly (including a heavily used fareless square). Visitors can ride in by train from the burbs or drive in & park & not have to drive again for the rest of their stay. There are plenty of bike paths to go along with that. The city is working to make biking safer every year. I never drive & love it. The city also publishes walking guides for the popular neighborhoods making it easier for visitors to get around on foot/public transit.
-There are more LEED certified buildings than any other city & more coming.
-There is a push to shop local as often as possible here which isn't difficult having a fairly sustainable, local economy. Farmer's markets are often & plentiful.
-The majority of power comes from renewable resources.
-Reforestation even within the city.
-More money supporting Environmental education in schools/universities. (Very important)
-Oregon has some good land-use policies that limit urban sprawl in turn making public transit work better & rebuilding "dead" areas/neighborhoods instead of building new in the outskirts. (also very important)
I could go on but could also go on about what's not being done just like in any other place.

What would you buy a 21 yr old girl living in the city? She loves the sea, green, photography, and she going to live in China for 3 months (so she's learning chinese)
Any suggestions?
the picture frame idea is cute, but i would put more with it.
maybe make up a little survival guide.. like an enlish to spanish quick translation book, maybe some of her favorite food (especially candy)that she might miss in China. if she has a laptop, it would be a good idea to get her a skype camera.. she can see you and you can see her and you can talk for free!!!
