I am Avik Tirki. I wanted to buy something for the power backup as power cuts during my working hours. But I am confused what to go for either inverter or UPS. I want to have the one that is cheaper and consumes less electricity.
Perhaps the best way to answer your question is to describe what a UPS is and what an inverter is.
An inverter is used to provide a higher voltage supply from a lower voltage source. For example, you can get an inverter that will supply 240V AC from a 12V battery.
A UPS is a Universal Power Supply. UPS units are normally used to provide conditioned power to a device. Computer equipment is one of the many types of devices that might be receive it's electricity supply via a UPS (other examples include expensive Audio Visual equipment, and sensitive medical equipment). Most UPS units will include an inverter within the unit, as this is how they supply electricity from the batteries contained within the UPS unit.
My suggestion, therefore, is to get a UPS. The UPS will protect your equipment from the nasty power spikes that occur within the electricity grid when power is suddenly cut and/or restarted. Depending on what UPS you purchase, you may find that you might be able to continue to work for a significant period of time using the batteries within the UPS unit.

My power inverter is not working to charge my laptop. Whats wrong?
I've tried two power inverters, both 400W, to run a laptop charger on my boat. The first was an old one and after a minute or so the fault beep and light would come on. I figured it was going bad so I bought a new one and the same problem. I'm assuming its the modified sine type inverter. Is there a way I can fix this or make a cheap rectifier some how? After doing research I see people saying an inverter will charge a laptop. Why won't it work with mine?
Its got more than 12V. I tried it with the engine running too. Its a big boat with 2 large batteries that power a fridge along with the rest of the componets, so it should be powerful enough.
It could be that your boat battery is not powerful enough. You could try an uprated battery for your boat. I could be completely wrong but people who have entertainment systems in their cars generally have to get more powerful batteries and uprated alternators too.
