Hey guys im looking for a bearing to use for a VAWT savenous im using 2 btw,
im using a 1 inch shaft and was wondering if anyone could tell me where im likely to find a good bearing for this project: eg local bearing shop, skate shop ect
i did go to the local bearing shop and bought 2 bearings but found that they did not spin very freely, after we rang the guy up about this he said that its like this because of grease and that it wares really quick if it doesnt have the grease or something
so basicly where can i find a good beairng for a 250-500 watt VAWT savenous turbine

im building it from scratch myself
what size fan are you going to put on it?
1" shaft seems more than adequate.
but not a lot more.
there are several kinds of bearings.
simple race, or permanently sealed come to mind immediately.
eg electric motors come with permanently sealed bearings more often than not these days.
that's probably what you'll want, because at 500 watts, you're not going to want to go up and clean and re-grease them.
and you can be sure that, up in the wind, they'll get grit in them. Bad idea.
it's hard to tell what you mean by hard to turn.
keep in mind, for 500 watts = 2/3 hp, some rotational friction in the shaft will be pretty negligible.
however, you'll also need to insure that the bearings can withstand lateral thrust as will as rotation.

ps, this is a fairly dangerous thing.
you're going to need a sizable fan.
and when it gets turning, there's considerable kinetic energy in it.
if it gets loose, it can do quite a bit of damage.
one time we were testing a 4 1/2 foot fan, around 500 rpm (quite fast) and it tore itself apart, sending 1 blade half way through a 2x4.
you want to be really careful, and make sure your structure will support the fan and not come apart in a high wind.
did i tell you that this was fairly dangerous?

bad idea.
to get any kind of power out of it, it needs to turn fairly fast.
and if it does that, it must be perfectly balanced.
which you cannot do at home.
really.
i worked for a fan company for 2 years.
large fans, out of balance, don't work.
this really is to dangerous. REALLY.
