Are fossil fuels technically carbon neutral?
If biofuels are considered carbon neutral because they remove CO2 from the atmosphere before being being used, shouldn't fossil fuels ALSO be carbon neutral since they were once plants that collected CO2 from the atmosphere and are now being used?
Also, wouldn't the fact that so much fossil fuels exist mean that there was higher levels of CO2 in the past then there currently is now since the CO2 that was in the atmosphere millions of years ago has been stored for all those years?
Biofuels can be considered 'carbon neutral' as they absorb CO2. However normal fossil fuels aren't carbon neutral because they absorbed CO2 millions of years ago, so they aren't really giving our environment any benefit now. Also CO2 isn't 'stored' in fossil fuels. The CO2 they absorbed years ago will have been used in photosynthesis, it's not just 'locked' inside the fossil fuel. So there weren't necessarily high levels of CO2 long ago. The CO2 generated by burning fossil fuels comes from the burning: Fuel + Oxygen -> CO2 + Water
