biofuels employment Frequently Asked Questions

Begging for help!!! Haiti's standing point on these issues?? ( MUN)?

hello,
If anyone could help me, it would be greatly apreciated.
I need to write one statement on each issue. This should explicitly say what haiti's policies are on the different topics and need to b elaborated.

the three issues are

Issue 1: Deteriorating wages and employment for youths

Issue 2: Sibling-headed household in Africa

and finaly

Issue 3: Threat of biofuels on food security..

these issues are more thoroughly explained on http://www.aismun.org/ecosoc.htm.

If Any1 could help me create a a policity statement for haitie's standing point it woudl be much apreciated.. Thank you..

Okay, I'm going to take a shot at addressing these issues but I think that perhaps you might be misunderstanding your assignment (because Haiti is in the Caribbean, not Africa).

Let me preface everything I'm going to say be pointing out that Haiti is a country and countries in and of themselves don't necessarily have opinions. Government leaders do, as do individual citizens. Also, countries can endorse or ratify international treaties and covenants. Some of those can relate to the questions you are asking.

Issue #1 - these are actually two separate, but related, issues. I don't understand your question enough to say if the Haitian government has taken a stance on the issue. But I think if you look at the sources listed below that you will be able to learn more about the issues and clarify what question you are actually trying to ask.

Employment of youth is legal in Haiti.

Issue #2 - There is no official government policy or statement by any government leader (that I can find) about sibling-headed households in Africa. Haiti has endorsed the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child which was adopted in 1989 and states that every child should have the right to life, education, health care, an adequate standard of living, and freedom from economic exploitation and other abuse. Some of the serious issues facing child-headed households relate directly to rights endorsed by the Republic of Haiti in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. Actually a good resource on this issue is Partners in Health, an organization with a long history of working both with children (including youth from child-headed households) and within Haiti.

Issue #3 - threats to food security in Haiti have little to do with biofueles and much more to do with foreign businesses in Haiti, structural adjustment, and Haiti's poor economy. Food insecurity is common in Haiti with nearly 4 million Haitians undernourished. For information on food insecurity in Haiti, I would suggest contacting the World Food Program. The Haiti director for the WFP is Mamadou Mbaye and his phone number is 509-2-229-1665.

In terms of biofuels, there's no Haitian government statement on the issue. There is a lot of information on potential threat of biofuels to food security. I would suggest the following two sites: http://kenvironews.wordpress.com/2007/10/31/are-biofuels-a-threat-to-food-security/
and
http://www.fao.org/nr/ben/befs/background.html . You can also call the food and agricultural organization at the United Nations for info on their biofuel project. The number in Rome for Irini Maltsoglou, a Food Security Economist, is 39-06-570-51.
