biofuels controversy Frequently Asked Questions

What are peoples opinions on palm oil?

I'm doing a group project on biofuels. I want to know what people think of the use of palm oil and its controversy (your thoughts on its production e.g. deforestation and so on).

Many thanks

I am strongly against it.

It is considered a biofuel, but when you actually look deeper into it, you'll understand why it's not good. I've been to Borneo, and seen how much deforestation has taken place. For every gallon of Palm oil, there is 2 gallons of waste. It requires land that needs has the highest amount of vegetation (rainforests) and is found commonly in poor and corrupt nations, where protocol is not always followed. It's led to depleting populations of orangutans, and countless hazes and wildfires.

In Australia, it is common knowledge of the effects. Chocolate company Cadbury included palm oil in their chocolates in Australia. Two months later, after huge outburst from the public, it was removed from their products.

In Europe and the United Kingdom, many people actually favor Palm Oil. Before, Soybean Oil was the chosen oil for processed foods. However, after the GMO (AKA cloned) soybean scare, all the companies turned to Palm Oil.

In the United States/Canada, people don't know whats wrong with Palm Oil. Its used in everyday products without any hint of protest.

I did this as my high school project. If you want to read my paper, I can email it to you. However note, that many people out there who are not environmental will disagree with me, just like they don't approve of windmills.
