biofuels car Frequently Asked Questions

can any car run on biofuels?

Ignore Bob - he doesn't know what he's talking about. Unless, he refers to a very small percentage (5% to 10%) of bio-fuel mixed with normal fuel

The correct answer is "No" not all cars can run on biofuel.

Older BMW diesels are better on bio-fuel (but still not perfect), but any of their Diesels in the last 4 years (common rail direct injection) do not like bio-fuel. There have been a few failed engines where bio-fuel has been used that have not been repaired under warranty. These cars all less than 3 years old.

I've cut and pasted this from the link below, B30 refers to a mix of 30% Bio-Diesel to 70% normal diesel:

"Manufacturers which have said that B30 is definitely NOT approved include, Alfa Romeo, Audi, BMW, Chrysler, Fiat, Ford, Honda, Hyundai, Jaguar, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Renault, Seat, Skoda, Toyota, Volvo and Volkswagen. Vauxhall has approved it for some Vivaro and Movano LCVs but with conditions including replacement of the fuel filter at 24,000 miles and signing a ‘conditions of use’ document as well as providing VIN numbers of the vehicles intending to use the fuel. Peugeot will sanction use of the fuel but says that a special dispensation is required to ensure that fuel quality standards are respected. Citroën too, will sanction the fuel but also applies special restrictions. The main diesel fuel injection equipment suppliers say that they would not sanction the use of more than five per cent bio-diesel until such time as a BSI or ISO standard was agreed."

Don't risk it, unless Bob is happy to pay for any repairs - is that ok Bob?

Palm oil running in a gas engine?

I thought that they had modifications that you can buy and that it has something to do with the carburetor to allow thick fuel like biofuels to run on a car ?

Sure that's an Otto cycle engine?
Diesel cycle engines can be made to run on just about any kind of fuel. Just got to be a tad careful
a) not to blow the very expensive pump (if the fuel is more viscous than diesel- heating the fuel up usually deals with that)
b) ensure any rubber components in the fuel system aren't attacked/dissolved by the fuel
c) that the fuel injectors keep themselves free of clogging. Veg/animal oils contain glycerol and under the high temps/pressures of combustion, it has a bit of tendency to turn into a material that resembles epoxy resin- not the kind of thing you want anywhere near the very precisely machined holes needed in the injectors to get the fine sprays needed for proper combustion without smoke. bio-diesel is made in much the same way as soap (just in alcohol with absolutely no trace of water) -like soap making it to produces glycerol as a by-product (it often goes into cosmetics)
