Diesel Engine sitting 5 years?
I have found a M21 2.4l BMW I6 turbo diesel engine in a 1984 Lincoln Continental. The car hasn't been driven since 2004. Upon looking at the motor it has a light layer of oxide that completely covers the motor and has motor oil coming out what I think is the air intake.
I plan on doing an engine swap into a newer BMW E39 to improve fuel economy, but I want some opinions on this motor. In america this is a rather rare motor. Only 200-500 made in the Lincoln's. I would like to know what would probably need to be done in order to get it running again. It is all mechanical, no ECU. I would assume a oil change, and to drain all the old diesel (if any) out the motor, as well as replace all the fuel/oil filters.
According the the owner. The original motors timing belt snapped and created a catastrophic failure. The engine was replaced in 1998 and the new motor only has 10,000 miles on it.

definately drain and flush the fuel system with fresh diesel. Diesel has a 'life' of about 8 months.
Drain the fuel tank, add fresh diesel. Open the fuel line TO the high presure pump (Injector pump). turn ignition to ON, lift pump should push fresh fuel to pressure pump. (May need to crank the engine if its a mechanical lift pump) tighten supply line, crack (Loosen, not remove) injector lines, crank engine and watch for fuel pressure at all injectors, (fuel spurting from all injectors) stop cranking, tighten all injector lines. Try to start
