alternative energy solutions Frequently Asked Questions

Re: Energy, wouldn't the invisible hand of the free market lead us to depend on oil until it ran out?

Since I got so many responses saying it was economically inviable to switch to alternative energy sources.. I get it.. oil and coal are cheaper. They're also fossil fuels, natural resources that took millions of years to develop and that will run out, and not in that long, likely... so yes, it's more expensive to switch to more viable solutions, and might require subsidies, but in the long run, doesn't it make more ecnomic sense to switch to an energy solution that isn't going to run out? Even in pure economic sense? (Nevermind the catastrophes that await us should we continue polluting the earth, nor the impact should we run out of these vital fuels and not be ready for it?)

Yes. Unless something is discovered that is more viable than oil, then the invisible hand will pump oil to the last drop. The invisible hand would also make as many girls into prostitutes as humanly possible. Supply and demand.

Edit: of course it'll become really expensive, and we might not finish it all, but the point is: There is no government in the world that is 100% free market. That's as ridiculous as it being 100% centralized under a government. It doesn't work. You need balance.

How to be more self sustaining?

My girlfriend & I bought a small farm in the Carpathian mountains(Slovakia) a year back. We have 2 Acres which includes vegetable gardens, an orchard & meadow. We supply our own heating/ cooking fuel(wood), water(well), & about a third of our own food. We recycle & re-use most of our waste & our 'black water' waste is dispersed through a soak pit. However, we want to make our place greener & become more self sustaining & sufficient by providing more of our own food, introduce solar(or an alternative electrical supply) energy to the farm & try to harness the methane from our soak pit to improve our heating & cooking systems. Does anyone know of a good website or on-line community that can provide advice & provide answers to some of our more technical questions? Most of the ones I have managed to find tend to offer expensive solutions & rely very heavily on modern technology & we, living as we do, have very little money & want to reduce our dependance on technology. Thanks for any help

There is a wealth of information. I've listed a few in the sources.
