instead of a mutual fund take a look at some of the ETF's from powershares the one that gets a lot of attention is PBW (powershares wilderhill clean energy portfolio).
Now keep in mind this IS a commiecrat ploy and their missions are as follows one cut and run, two tax the bejesus out of big oil, three raise taxes, four cut and run, five let the dividend tax break expire, and finally six cut and run.
the wisdom of buying into the stock market now?
I'm a college student, and I have some built up savings that I'm thinking about investing. My parents are taking care of my tuition and board, so my job here at school covers my cost of living.
From what I hear, there is always a dramatic upturn in the market after it bottoms out. That, coupled with a probable Obama presidency (I think) makes alternative energy companies a good bet.
I'm avoiding mutual funds for now, I already have a substantial stake there, and I've taken a bath the last year.
But before I sink 8 grand into single stocks, I was wondering what the conventional wisdom said about this bet?
Thanks for your opinions
I'd be a little wary of alternative energy stocks. If you get lucky on a company you could land a windfall. But alternative energies aren't currently cost-effective. Otherwise we'd be using them. For example solar power is about 5-10 times more expensive (per kilowatt-hour) than natural gas. I doubt ethanol will ever be cost-effective compared to other sources. It currently takes more energy to make ethanol than the ethanol produces.
We probably need 10+ years of R&D before these alternative energy companies start making money. A few will probably go bankrupt meanwhile. I don't know enough to pick a winner in terms of technology and/or company.
One exception: nuclear power is very cost effective. Some define that as an "alternative energy". Some don't. I wouldn't be bullish on that under Obama.
A near exception: Wind power. That's maybe only about 50% more expensive than natural gas. With more R&D and mass production that might be cost-effective in 2-3 years.
Long-term I'm bullish on alternative energies. We simply have to develop them. But if you want to invest in them I'd diversify a lot - we don't know who the winners will be. And I'd be very patient (10+ years) before looking for a large profit.
