Well, I have been living off the grid for a little over 16 years now, and yet I am answering this question. How can that be, if I am nowhere near the nearest power lines ? Well, quite simple really. I live on Solar Electric Panels which collect solar rays all day long, and store what I don't use in a set of HD batteries , which I use at night. Works well for us for sure. I intend to add at least 4 more solar panels next month along with about 8 more batteries and also a new wind generator. I will be installing a small wind gen. which will put out about 400 watts of power. But if you look at the average size of say my solar panels , which are about 80 watt each, it will be about the equivalent of say 5 solar panels , when the wind is blowing, which is just about all the time here where I live in Arizona. Yes , it is expensive to get started, however, once you have it, when the nearest town etc suffers from a blackout no matter what the cause, you can rest assured that my computers and tv , lights etc all are still up and working. The new cap and trade bill going through congress which will put about a 3,000.00 a year tax on every household in America attached to your elec. bill as a fed. tax, it will not affect me in any way. And that is because I am not getting an elec. bill ever. Therefore no tax. Also some states and the fed. govt are giving tax credits as much as 50% of the total install bill for putting in solar elect and or wind. Combination of both is the best and you would still want a small elect. gen for those few times when it is cloudy, stormy but with no wind. Rock
