against alternative energy Frequently Asked Questions

How are alternative energy vehicles bad for America?

I am debating against changing all cars into alternative, and l was working on how the change would negatively effect the U.S.

Any new vehicle requires a fair bit of raw materials and energy to build and the promotion of alternative fuels that require new vehicles and or new infrastructure would represent a demand for new vehicles above what's necessary to provide convenient transportation for the nation. In truth the automobile industry is already quite inflated by using techniques such as model years, tail fins and designed obsolescence to increase the demand for new vehicles. The most recent examples have been the SUV replacing the mini-van which replaced the station wagon and the Hybrid and Flexfuel badging. Of course, it's this artificially inflated consumerism that has driven our nation to where it's at now and to correct production levels back down to what's actually needed would be devastating to many families as it would mean a massive loss of jobs.

However, is it even necessary to replace the vehicles to take advantage of alternative energies? What is gasoline except energy chemically stored as hydrocarbons? Essentially it's a battery except that we unearthed it, already charged over millions of years from deep within the Earth and toss it away into the atmosphere when we're done with it. What if we used clean energy to reform CO2 and H2O back into hydrocarbons and oxygen? This has already been done by Sandia National Labs, they built the CR5 as an attempt to more efficiently produce hydrogen but soon realized that the same process could produce carbon monoxide from carbon dioxide and that with both hydrogen and carbon monoxide, any linear hydrocarbon could be synthesized in exothermic Fischer Tropsch reactions. It isn't necessary to change the cars, just how we produce the fuels.

Also hydrogen and carbon monoxide gases can be produced from the gasification/pyrolysis of biomass such as trash and dried sewage with the charcoal byproduct sequestered as biochar resulting in a carbon negative fuel. If we don't replace our existing vehicles with alternatives but focus on changing how we make gasoline, we can actually remove CO2 from the atmosphere. Promoting alternative vehicles would only reduce our potential to remove CO2 from the atmosphere and add more CO2 by virtue of manufacturing new vehicles to replace existing vehicles.

Of course, environmental reasons aren't what drives our economy, at least not yet. The replacement of existing vehicles with freshly minted fuel cell and electric vehicles would continue the century old growth trend of our manufacturing industry and keep people employed. It could be an effective way of continuing the concept of the blue collar middle class. Employment and prosperity would sound very good to a lot of people right now and with the misconception that such vehicles are actually beneficial to the environment when in fact the older gas guzzlers have more potential benefit would salve the conscious of the masses as they raped the Earth.

Having said that, I would love to have a CNG plugin hybrid microcar commuter with the battery capacity to make my daily commute on electricity alone simply because the operational costs would be so dramatically lower than that of a conventional vehicle plus both the CNG and the electricity would be topped off every night at home eliminating the need to go to the gas station.
